Wow. People will slash anything.

"Out of practice, old boy?" He ducked back down again, licking the skin behind my ear. "We'll see if we can remedy that."

Mm-hm. That's from a Great Expectations fanfiction I found. Someone has slashed Pip and Herbert. It's both hilarious and dreadful--the idea, I mean. (The writing, as far as I read it, wasn't too bad.)

I'm reading Great Expectations now, see. And while I'm not particularly gripped by it, the question did occur to me whether anyone had written slash for it--which, in this day and age, is always a stupid question, the answer always being "yes." *shakes head in amazement*

So: more academic news: got the abstract and introduction of my master's thesis done, or at least a rough version thereof. Here's the topic, lest you were still inclined to find me interesting:

"In this thesis I examine the linguistic advice given to American English speakers in etiquette manuals and other sources of verbal criticism. My focus is on sources written by (and for) the citizens of the U.S., from the end of the Civil War (circa 1865) to the beginning of World War Two (c. 1940). I trace some of the major sociolinguistic changes from the beginning to the end of this period, concentrating on the speech styles used for social interaction. I find that the prescriptions of the late 19th century tend to be more avoidance-based than those of the 20th century, and that 19th-century sources tend to equate linguistic style more directly with morality. I also find that the earlier texts reflect, and urge, a greater divide between female and male speech styles. Although my main intention is to sketch the general picture of linguistic etiquette in this 80-year span in the past, I occasionally make comparison to preferred styles of today (2002-2003)."

Isn't that great? I put it here not because I think you care, but because I'm proud to have actually accomplished something so far during winter break. I think I can trust you all not to steal my idea and write the same thesis before I finish mine. ;)

Twenty-seven-and-a-half hours till The Two Towers, but who's counting?

Fanfiction.net had that particular one. Don't know if they have much more in the way of Dickens slash, but anyway, here's that one:
